Light Grenades

I consider Incubus as one of the rock bands I’ve listened to, who bears the most influence to me being a music lover and a former drummer. I’ve been so inclined to the type of jargon-ish and somewhat, philosophical song writing ways of Brandon and the restless drum patterns of Jose ever since I’ve listened to their album Make Yourself. Who would have thought that a bunch of teenagers could make their first album recording within the confines of a garage? They must have been good. Heck, they are great!

I’ve collected all of their six (6) albums (Powie even had an ep copy of the band entitled Enjoy Incubus plus the “Singles” since he has more dough than I) and one would be able to notice that each album has a distinct characteristic to it. For most part of Fungus Amongus, the band had been, IMHO, having a sort of Primus type of blend to it.

When it comes to the album SCIENCE, I guess it’s pretty much created with tiny bits of rap metal influence though the band never really lost touch with their sense of funk, punk, and jazz inclinations on the said album. Most of my friends consider this to be the best Incubus album ever.

Make Yourself and Morning View have been the transition of Incubus from being an “underground” band to becoming a mainstream type of a rock band especially with songs like Pardon Me, Stellar, Wish You Were Here, Warning, and Are You In? filling the radio air waves and MTV. They have gain ground almost to a point of having been labeled as Pop-ish by some music “critics”.

A Crow Left At A Murder had shown signs of an ever growing musical maturity of the band, with the arrival of Ben as the new bassist for the band, displaying their creativity by blending 90’s grunge rock and present day pop-alternative rock. A definition highly labeled by Powie as “New School”. At first, many were not impressed by the said album since it has been a complete escape from what has been the “Less Is More” philosophy behind the album Morning View. As for me, I’ve loved songs from that album like Southern Girl, Talk Show On Mute, and Here In My Room where Mike and the band poured in some musical influence from Bjork.

As for Light Grenades, per usual, many did not loved, let alone liked, the album. People tend to be distant to the idea of change or of something new and fresh (IMHO). As for me, I’ve loved the song Diamonds and Coal and hope to watch and hear a grandiose performance from the band come 9th of March playing that song. I love Diamonds and Coal because of its up-beat/light tone/groovy baseline and catchy and melodic lyrics. I also look forward to hear the band insert some music clips of songs from the band Sting and The Police not to mention Brandon singing shirtless. Ahem. Here you go, Diamonds and Coal.

If it’s good to complicate then both of us are doing fine
Just keep your eyes on your part and leave me alone to mine
If it’s good to instigate we’re a fast horse, bet on us
I’m not calling you an animal
I think we just fight too much
Come on, in spite of this we’re doing just fine
Even diamonds start as coal
Give us time to shine
Even diamonds start as coal
We’re both aligned in framed of mind but circumstance has got us good
And now you’re seeing a side of me I wished no one ever would
Yeah, if it’s right to pick a fight, we’re fingers in a sugar bowl
Love isn’t perfect
Even diamonds start out as coal
Hey now, in spite of this we’re doing just fine
Even diamonds start as coal
Give us time to shine
Even diamonds start as coal
We’re incomplete and infantine
Even diamonds start as coal.
Give it time girl, the fire feels divine
The sweetest things
They burn before they shine
We think way too much
Look at us losing touch
A promise is a promise until…
Yeah, in spite of this we’re doing just fine
Even diamonds start as coal
Give us time to shine
Even diamonds starts as coal.
We’re incomplete and infantile
Even diamonds start as coal
